Bridge work to close part of Broadway for 10 hours
Traffic and pedestrians will be barred in the affected area from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday.
The steel girders that will support the new Greenkill Avenue bridge over Broadway are to be erected Friday night and early Saturday, and a section of Broadway will be closed to both traffic and pedestrians for 10 hours as a result, the mayor’s office said Wednesday.
Broadway will be closed between Dederick and Thomas streets in Midtown from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday.
The old bridge, built in 1952, was taken down late last year due to deterioration that was deemed too serious to repair. A new span is being erected in its place.
The $2.1 million project is being carried out by contractor Bette & Cring and is to be completed later this year. The state is picking up about 95 percent of the cost.
The old bridge carried an average of 4,000 vehicles per day.
