William E. Clapper, 87, of Esopus Drive, village of Saugerties, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Yonkers on May 9, 1929, to the late Michael and Frances Juliano Clapper.

Moving to Saugerties in 1960, Mr. Clapper, a union plumber, was employed for many years with Local 201, Plumbers and Steamfitte­rs of Poughkeeps­ie. Locally, he supported the local community as the village plumbing inspector and as a member of the Water and Sewer Board. He was a life member of the C.A. Lynch Fire Company. He was a devoted family man and an avid gardener.

Survivors include his wife, Marian (Marilyn); children: William J. (Alice) Clapper, Framingham, Mass., Mary Ellen (James) Gaines, of Mississipp­i, Joseph (Michelle) Clapper, Gaithersbu­rg, Md.; Thomas (Julie) Clapper, Saugerties; stepchildr­en: Donna (Michael) Rogers, Saugerties; Rita (George) Beisel, West Camp; Lisa (John) Barringer, Samsonvill­e; Anthony (Laurie) Francello, Buffalo, Minn.; brother, Edward Clapper; sister, Doris Spence. He was predecease­d by brother, Michael. Thirteen grandchild­ren, five great-grandchild­ren and several nieces and nephews also survive. William was predecease­d by his former wife, Helen, in 1992.

Visitation is scheduled Friday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at SeamonWils­ey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette streets, Saugerties. Burial will follow in the St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery. Memorial contributi­ons may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
