Avan Holland, Jr., of Kingston, N.Y., died Monday, April 24, 2017, at his home. He was 82.

He was born in Kingston, N.Y., a son of the late Avan Holland, Sr., the late Lorraine McCauley, and the late Kathleen Jackson Holland. He was educated in the Kingston School System. While in school, Avan ran track and cross country, also took classes in auto shop and mechanical shop; however, it was in woodworkin­g where he excelled. Avan was an avid gardener, his favorite pastime.

As a very young lad, Avan loved animals. His favorite pet was a dog named, Lucky. Lucky was well cared for by Avon.

Avan Jr. was employed at Svirsky Resort in Ulster Park and the Star Brick Yard at Goldrick’s Landing. After the brickyard closed, he became employed by Kingston High School until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Brodhead Holland; children: Robert, Bruce, and Lois Brodhead; and siblings: Mattie (Earnest) and Nathaniel (Fannie).

He leaves to mourn, long-time companion, Elizabeth Banks of Kingston, N.Y.; daughter, Barbara (Joe) of Kingston, N.Y.; and siblings: Edward (Dorothy) of Saugerties, N.Y., Joyce (Charles) of Raleigh, N.C., Joseph (Theresa) of Burlington, N.J.; and Julia (Anthony) of Bellevue, Neb. He also leaves to mourn a host of aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Mr. Holland will repose 11 a.m. to 12 noon Friday, May 5, 2017, at New Central Baptist Church, 229 East Strand Street, Kingston, N.Y. Service at 12 Noon. Rev. Arthur Coston will officiate. Interment at Wiltwyck Cemetery, Kingston, N.Y.
