Highland rallies to beat Wallkill in 11 innings

Highland High rallied for a run in the seventh inning to tie and scored twice in the 11th to outlast Wallkill 5-4 in a exciting MHAL softball game. Emily Defini pitched all 11 innings for the Huskies.

Emily Defini pitched all 11 innings for the Huskies, striking out 15 and allowing just four hits.

Paige Dauenheime­r’s home run in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at 3-3 and forced extra innings for Highland.

After Wallkill went ahead on a wild pitch in the top of the 11th, the Huskies battled back again. Lucia Long’s squeeze bunt tied the game. Dauenheime­r later came through again, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Mollee Stafford for the game-winner.

Nikayla Schlosser’s bases-loaded walk in the second and Ella Cappillino’s RBI single in the fifth had Highland ahead 2-0, but the Panthers rallied for three runs in the sixth. The big hit there was Marissa Destefano’s two-run double.

Cappillino and Sheree Mills each had two hits for Highland, while Madison Dembroski doubled for Wallkill. Saugerties 4, Red Hook 2

At Red Hook, Saugerties rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the fifth and winning pitcher Claire Filak’s solo homer in the seventh. Filak finished with two hits and two runs scored.

Alexis Murphy and Alyssa Rusnock had two hits apiece for the Raiders. Rhinebeck 6, Ellenville 1

At Rhinebeck, Sara Stiverson struck out 10 and tossed a five-hitter to lead the Hawks.

Annabeth Gausepohl had two singles and two RBI and Erin Duke hit a two-run triple for Rhinebeck.

Ellenville senior Drew Bugna singled for her 100th career hit. Marlboro 9, Seward 8

At Florida, Marlboro held on for a non-leaguer victory as winning pitcher Mel Papuli got a popup to end the game after Seward scored twice and had two runners on in the bottom of the seventh.

Leadoff batter Victoria Sorace went 4-for-5 with three singles and a double to lead Marlboro’s 18hit assault. Papuli singled and doubled, Maddy Hadley doubled, Gabrielle Nelson singled and tripled and Kasey Conn, Taylor Felicello, Danielle Macario and Shannon Camuso had two hits apiece. Millbrook 14, Onteora 12

At Boiceville, Abby Hackbarth (single, double, two RBI), Erica Gartelman (single, double, RBI) and Alyssa Bilodeay (two singles, four stolen bases) led Millbrook to an extra-inning win.

Kathryn Fisher (single, double, four steals), Amelia Schlichtin­g (two singles, four steals) and Kylie Kline (two singles, two steals) paced (06) Onteora. Ashley VanValkenb­urg, who struck out eight, took the loss.
