Hawks’ run in tourney ends in loss

-

SUNY New Paltz’s softball season came to an end as the Hawks lost twice on the first day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference tournament.

New Paltz lost 3-2 in the first game by Oswego, then were eliminated by Oneonta 14-5.

Oswego scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win game one.

New Paltz seemingly had a 2-1 win when, with two out, Katie Heselden swung at a third strike. The Hawks began to charge the field in celebration, but the ball hit the ground and Heselden reached first safely and pinch-runner Kim Dunst scored from second to tie.

Erin Sweeney then singled to put runners on the corners and Jessica Roe singled for the game-winner

New Paltz had tied at 1-1 on Fallon Spriggs’ sacrifice fly in the sixth and went ahead on Alexa Mastando’s RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Oneonta broke open a 4-2 game with a six-run fifth in the elimination contest.

Lauren Sabato (double, four RBI) and Katie O’Gorman (two singles, double, triple, three RBI) led Oneonta.

Spriggs (single, double), Kiersten Carlomagno (single, double, two RBI) and Taylor LaFrance (two singles) paced New Paltz, which finished the season with an 18-20 record.

New Paltz’s run in the baseball tournament, meanwhile, was over before it began. Rain for the complete cancellation of the SUNYAC tournament, with top-seed Oswego being automatically awarded the conference title and automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
