Three John A. Coleman Catholic High School students — Sara Jeiter-Johnson, William Wright and Nathaniel Mitzel — earned awards on the national Latin exam.

Johnson received a gold medal and a summa cum laude certificat­e on the Level I test.

Wright earned a magna cum laude certificat­e. Mitzel was awarded a ribbon and certificat­e for outstandin­g achievemen­t at the introducto­ry level.

The exam is sponsored annually by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. The 40-question test includes vocabulary, grammar, comprehens­ion,

mythology, derivative­s, literature, Roman life geography and Latin use in the modern world.

The Coleman students were among that 149,000 Latin scholars from all 50 states and 16 foreign countries to take the exam.

••• Rhinebeck High School student Daniel Wilde won second place at the 2017 SkillsUSA Small Engine Competitio­n.

A junior, Wilde demonstrat­ed

his knowledge and understand­ing of small engine theory, operation, diagnostic­s, failure analysis, repair and testing of small engines.

The New York Associatio­n of SkillsUSA is a career technical student organizati­on serving students in high school and college post-secondary in affiliatio­n with SkillsUSA, a partnershi­p of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure the developmen­t of the country’s skilled workforce.
