Ryan Samuels of Hurley, a student at Western New England University in Springfiel­d, Mass., was inducted into the university’s chapter of the Mortar Board National Honor Society on April 10.

Mortar Board is the senior honor society at Western New England. The society is open to those students who have demonstrat­ed both academic excellence and leadership on campus and in the community. Students in the top 35 percent of the junior class are considered eligible for the society, with the membership being selected by the existing members of the previous year.

••• Two Saugerties residents attending Siena College in Loudonvill­e — Harry Giles and Olivia Westwood — were among the recipients of senior academic awards.

Giles received the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountant­s Award. Westwood received the UHY Advisors Award. UHY Advisors is a tax and business consulting company.

••• Kayleigh Myer of Mount Marion, a student at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., received an honorable mention in the university’s 2017 Leslie Sander Writing Contest.

Myer, a senior, was recognized in the short fiction category for a piece titled “He Told Me That I Really Did It, I Really Made The Male Body Unimportan­t.”

The annual contest, a memorial to alum Leslie Sander, celebrates the achievemen­ts of the college’s gifted writers. Students have six weeks to submit a piece in one or more of five categories: Personal essay, expository essay, first-year seminar essay, short fiction and dramatic writing. A panel of faculty and staff judges each category entry.

••• Mitchell Rogerson of Lake Katrine, a student at the University at Albany, was named an Orientatio­n Group leader.

The Orientatio­n Team plays a vital role in helping new students and families adjust to the campus community. Orientatio­n leaders go above and beyond to welcome students and families by creating an engaging and informativ­e environmen­t and serving as a resource for new students and their families.

••• Elizabeth Buono of Saugerties was named to the dean’s list at Elmira College for the winter term.

Students earn dean’s list status by achieving a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.
