The police chief for the Orange County town of Montgomery and village of Maybrook was shot in the upper torso Tuesday morning in the village, and the suspect was found dead several hours later.

The suspect barricaded himself in a home on Abbey Street in the village after the 9:20 a.m. shooting. Shortly after 3 p.m., Montgomery Supervisor Michael Hayes said the man, identified later by state police as Anthony Bostick, 28, was dead.

Police did not say how Bostick died, but the Times Heard-Record of Middletown reported he was shot by an officer.

Chief Arnold “Butch” Amthor

Amthor

was taken to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh for treatment after being shot and was “expected to make a full recovery,”

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said in a prepared statement.

State police said Bostick shot Amthor after the chief and other officers responded to a domestic disturbance.

“There was an exchange

of gunfire, and Chief Amthor was struck in the upper torso,” police said in a press release.

Neuhaus said he visited Amthor at the hospital. He said they have been close friends for more than 20 years, since they worked together in the city of

Newburgh.

“Butch is a true gentleman who has dedicated his life to law enforcement,” Neuhaus said. “I ask Orange County residents to keep Chief Amthor and his family in their prayers.”

Neuhaus said the shooting “serves as a reminder

of the dangers of police work and how deserving of our support and encouragement law enforcement is.”

Police at the scene after the shooting included SWAT teams from Orange and Sullivan counties, state police and officers

from several municipal departments. Police dogs and helicopters also were present.

The village of Maybrook is mostly in the town of Montgomery and partly in the town of Hamptonburgh, south of Interstate 84.
