Spoken Word hosts event May 20 in Kingston
WHAT: Spoken Word event WHEN: May 20 at 7 p.m.
WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills, 320 Sawkill Road, Kingston
DETAILS: Spoken Word, which features readings by writers, actors and poets, will present poets Terry Costa and Mike Jurkovic. Costa has been writing since the 1970s. Her most recently published poems appeared in “A Slant of Light,” “CAPS Anthology 2015,” “Home Planet News,” “Chronogram,” “Up The River Journal” and “Green Kill Newsletter.” Jurkovic’s poetry and musical criticism has appeared in over 400 magazines and periodicals, as well as in the anthologies “WaterWrites and Riverine” and “Will Work For Peace.” A 2016 Pushcart nominee, his poetry collections and chapbooks include “smitten by harpies & shiny banjo catfish,” “Eve’s Venom” and “Purgatory Road.” There will also be an open mic with a threeminute limit. A donation of $5 is suggested.

Irish language, culture and history focus of series
WHAT: Series on Irish language, culture and history WHEN: June 6 through 27 at 5 p.m.
WHERE: Red Hook Public Library, 7444 South Broadway, Red Hook
DETAILS: The library will present a four week series exploring Irish language, culture and history. This series is a follow-up to the Irish series in March. The course will explore Ireland’s linguistic evolution and provide an introduction to Irish conversation. This fun, no-pressure series is taught by Steve Lowry, a 30-year teacher and current Irish language Instructor for Bard College’s Irish Studies program. This program is free and open to the public. Advanced registration requested by phone or online via the website calendar.
