William F. Moughan Sr., 79, of Glasco

William F. Moughan Sr., died Friday, May 19, 2017, at home. He was 79 years old.

Born Jan. 19, 1938, in Hollymount, County Mayo, Ireland, he was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Walsh Moughan. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1956, and on May 11, 1963, he married the former Brigid O’Dowd, who predecease­d him on Dec. 12, 2015.

Before leaving Ireland, Bill was a member of the 1956 Championsh­ip All Ireland Minor Gaelic Football Team. Always proud of his County Mayo heritage, he enjoyed returning to visit Ireland as often as possible. In 1972, he and his family moved to Saugerties because the area reminded him of Ireland. He worked as a butcher for A&P Supermarke­t in Saugerties and then for Stone Ridge Market for many years. A parishione­r of St. Joseph Church in Glasco, he belonged to the Holy Name Society and was a Eucharisti­c minister. He was also a member of Saugerties Knights of Columbus Council 4536, where he was a Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator and Past Color Corps Commander.

Survivors include his three sons, Michael Moughan and his wife MaryAnne of Hurley, William Moughan Jr. of Saugerties, and Kevin Moughan and his wife Karen of Scotia, N.Y.; six grandchild­ren, Michelle, Mikey, Max, Jimmy, Tommy, and Liam; and three siblings, John Moughan of Ireland, Kathleen Weaver of Vancouver, Canada, and Sadie McCullough of Northern Ireland.

In addition to his wife, he was predecease­d by three siblings, Annie Burke, Bridie Moughan, and Michael Moughan.

The family also wants to express its deep gratitude to the staff and employees of Northern Dutchess Hospital, Archcare at Ferncliff and Hospice of Ulster and Dutchess Counties.

A funeral procession will form at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Buono Funeral Service Inc., Saugerties, N.Y., and then proceed to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Glasco, where at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow immediatel­y in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery, Barclay Heights. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 until 4 p.m. and again 7 until 9 p.m. at Buono Funeral Service Inc., Main Street, Saugerties.
