Relocated pavilion to be dedicated June 11

The town of Esopus will hold a dedication ceremony June 11 for a pavilion in Cas Landi Park.

The ceremony is to begin at 1 p.m. in the park, which is on state Route 213 in the hamlet of St. Remy.

The pavilion is actually a gazebo that was purchased with state grant money for placement in the Sleightsburgh Spit area along the Hudson River.

That location was scrubbed, though, because the town’s insurance policy wouldn’t cover the gazebo there. Being so close to the water made the structure a liability, McCord said.

“We had the gazebo, but it couldn’t be put up ... so it was left down behind the town highway garage for years,” the supervisor said. “I just thought it was such a waste ... and we certainly need one in St. Remy because there’s no shade and so many types of ball [are] played there ... and the parents always had to sit out in the open.”

McCord said members of the Bruderhof community donated the money for a local contractor to complete construction of the gazebo.

“There was a lot of donations that came in to cover the additional costs,” she said.

Cas Landi Park is named for Casimiro B. Landi, a former town Highway Department superintendent who worked for Esopus for 17 years. He died in 2014 at age 88.

“Cas Landi had a vision for having a park there, and he proposed a gazebo, but we were never able to fulfill that until this happened,” McCord said.
