Summer fill-up costs likely to be similar to last year’s

The average retail price of gasoline in New York state was unchanged over the past week at $2.49 per gallon.

The national average, meanwhile, fell 0.6 cents per gallon to a Monday average of $2.36, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy. com.

“With the summer driving season officially started, gasoline prices stand just a few cents higher than where they started last summer, an impressive feat,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. “With the national average now seeing minor decline and roughly at the same point it was a week ago, summer gas prices are shaping up to be quite a bit lower than previous expectatio­ns and similar to what we saw last summer. This sets up a great summer season to hit the road .... ”

New York’s average gas price on Monday was 5.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day a year ago but 2.5 cents lower than a month ago.

The national average has fallen 1.9 cents per gallon in the last month but is 3.5 cents higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on May 30 in New York state have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.43 per gallon in 2016, $2.86 in 2015, $3.87 in 2014, $3.75 in 2013 and $3.88 in 2012.
