Joseph R. Mercier, 88, of Kingston, died Monday, May 29, 2017, at HealthAlli­ance Hospital Broadway Campus.

Born in Hudson Falls, N.Y., he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Foley Mercier. He was a graduate of Glens Falls High School, where he was a prominent basketball player, and Albany Business College. Joe was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on the USS Pittsburgh during the Korean Conflict. He worked for IBM, as a financial administra­tor from 1954 until his retirement in 1987. Joe enjoyed all kinds of sports, he coached Little League and CYO basketball. He enjoyed world traveling with his wife Marie. River boat cruises were his favorite. He was best-known for two expression­s, “Don’t throw anything away” and “She’s a keeper”.

Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie Aiello Mercier, whom he married on Oct. 12, 1952; four sons, Peter Mercier of Kingston, Paul Mercier and his wife LaDusta of Houston, Texas, Michael Mercier and his wife Stacey of Averill Park, N.Y., and David Mercier and his wife Michelle of Niskayuna, N.Y.; seven grandchild­ren, Mark, Lynne, Sierra, Joseph, Allison, Sophia and Liam. Three nieces and three nephews also survive.

Joe will be reposing at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., on Thursday, June 1, 2017, from 3 to 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will form from the funeral home on Friday at 10:00 a.m.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church.

Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of one’s choice.
