RED HOOK, N.Y. » There’s a new gathering spot in town for seniors, teens, kids and local organizations looking for a place to meet.

The Red Hook Community Center opened on April 22 in the former Northern Dutchess Bible Church and Christian School at 59 Fisk St.

“It’s a place for meetings and gatherings, but we also have activities as well,” said Lauren Arcomano, the center’s executive director. “Our goal is to provide a place for the community to participate in any way it wants.”

Arcomano said the center has a variety of meeting rooms, including a large all-purpose community room that can seat up to 400 people, a computer lab, art lab, children’s playroom, a lounge, a card room and a game room which contains a pool table, air hockey table and foosball table.

The center provides meeting space for a number of organizations, including the Dutchess County Human Rights Committee, the Rainbow Coalition, a Narcotics Anonymous group, a Lyme disease support group and a teen leadership council.

Seniors and others can go to the community center to play cards, chess or Mahjong, to learn how to use a computer, or to take a yoga or tai-chi class.

Soon, Clifford the Big Red Dog — or at least a six-foot likeness of the beloved children’s character — will be calling the Red Hook Community Center home.

Arcomano said that on Friday, Clifford will be moved by a group of kids on skateboards from his current home at the Red Hook Public Library on South Broad-
