This summer’s “Movies Under the Stars” series in Kingston will begin July 21.

Established in 2011 by a group of community volunteers, “Movies Under the Stars” connects local residents and visitors to Kingston’s parks and public spaces through a series of free outdoor movie events.

The first movie scheduled for 2017 will be the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” on Friday, July 21, at Academy Green Park on Albany Avenue. That will be followed on Friday, July 28, by “La La Land” on Wall Street, in the city’s Uptown business district.

The city will show the animated film “Wall-E” on Friday, Aug. 4, at Forsyth Park on Lucas Avenue, and the local documentary “Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Removal” on Friday, Aug. 11, at T.R. Gallo Park in the Rondout district.

“Lost Rondout” is a film by Stephen Blauweiss and Lynn Woods that includes dozens of images of Kingston’s Rondout area just prior to and during the demolitions of the Urban Renewal program in the 1960s. It also incorporates archival footage taken in the 1930s and 1960s, as well as numerous historic photos.

Each “Movies Under the Stars” screening begins at 8:30 p.m. In the event of rain, notifications about postponements or cancellations will be posted at www.kingston-ny. gov and on the city’s Facebook page.

“This is one of my favorite traditions in the city of Kingston,” Mayor Steve Noble said in a press release. “It’s a great way to spend time with family and reconnect with neighbors. I encourage everyone to join in the fun and enjoy a free movie night in the park.”

The “Movies Under the Stars” series is made possible by sponsors, the press release said. To become a sponsor, contact City Clerk Carly Winnie at (845) 334-3914 or cwinnie@kingston-ny.gov.
