‘Mary Poppins’ comes to Woodstock Playhouse
WHAT: Stage production of “Mary Poppins”
WHEN: July 7 through 23, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
WHERE: Woodstock Playhouse, 103 Mill Hill Road, Woodstock
DETAILS: “Mary Poppins,” the beloved film classic, comes to the playhouse stage for nine performances featuring this year’s summer theatre cast. This “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” high-stepping musical production will charm the entire family. Join the Banks family, along with Bert the Chimney Sweep, as they welcome their new nanny, Mary Poppins, who literally flies onto the stage and into their home at Cherry Tree Lane. With unforgettable musical favorites — including “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Let’s Go Fly A Kite,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Step In Time” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” — the whole family will be humming their ways through days after the show. The performance is 2 hours and 45 minutes with an intermission. Ticket prices range from $32 to $44.

Tannersville arboretum offers beekeeping programs
WHAT: Program on beekeeping WHEN: July 15 from 10 a.m. to noon
WHERE: Mountain Top Arboretum, 4 Maude Adams Road, Tannersville
DETAILS: Many people are fascinated by bees, but are hesitant to go farther than meeting a bee unexpectedly in the garden. Arboretum beekeeper Adam Waldron will address some of the misunderstandings people have about bees. He will introduce participants to beekeeping by showing a hive, explaining how a bee colony is structured, discussing maintenance and, of course, collecting honey. Admission is $10, free for members.

Library hosts conversation on democracy
WHAT: Event, “Community Conversation on Democracy”
WHEN: July 12 at 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Olive Free Library, 4033 Route 28A, West Shokan
DETAILS: The library host an event titled “Community Conversation on Democracy.” It will be facilitated by Alicia Curlew from Onteora High School. Community Conversations are designed and sponsored by the nonprofit Humanities New York. Community Conversations provide an opportunity for people to come together for thoughtful discussion about our shared values as American — past, present and future. Focused on central themes in American life such as services, freedom and democracy, Community Conversations allow participants to join in discussions that offer a chance to take part in a shared national dialogue. To focus the conversation, all participants will read a short text (one page). It is an excerpt from “Creative Democracy” by John Dewey. Through discussion of the text, participants will have the opportunity to analyze the role democracy plays in their lives as members of local, national and global communities. Copies of the text are available at the library or via email. Admission is free, but preregistration is required.

Distance swimmers association offers tests
WHAT: Test for Minnewaska Distance Swimmers Association WHEN: July 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5 from noon to 2 p.m. WHERE: Moriello Pool, 32 Mulberry St., New Paltz DETAILS: The Minnewaska Distance Swimmers Association is offering tests for people interested in becoming a member. Prospective members must be at least 18 years of age and pass a test requiring a continuous swim for 500 yards (including 25 yards each of the crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke and freestyle backstroke) and treading water for 3 minutes. Prospective members must also fill out forms, including a release of liability; pay a $20 fee and provide two head-size photographs the size of a driver’s license photo. Be certain to bring two clear copies of your driver’s license photo. To save time at the test, application forms can be obtained in advance by downloading them from the association’s website, minnewaskaswimmers.org: application form (PDF) and NY Release (PDF). Tests will be given every Saturday in July. The final test will be on Aug. 5. All testing will be done at the Moriello Pool. There is a $4 entrance fee for the pool.

Germantown Garden Club luncheon to take place on July 18
WHAT: Germantown Garden Club luncheon and meeting WHEN: July 18 at noon
WHERE: The Central House, 220 Main St., Germantown
DETAILS: The Germantown Garden Club will have its annual luncheon and meeting at The Central House. The Central House was established in 1876. It has served as a brothel, a speakeasy, a stage coach house and various restaurants. Acquired in 2006 by the Lueck family, it officially reopened as an inn in the summer of 2011 after having been restored from an abandoned warehouse to it’s original beauty. New members to the club are always welcomed. On July 11, the club will be visiting the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park.
