Fillies set to host annual tournament

Six Kingston American Legion squads set to compete in Cantine Complex event

Forty eight softball teams in five age divisions will compete this weekend in the annual Kingston American Legion Post 150 Ulster Fillies at the Cantine Memorial Complex.

Opening ceremonies take place 6 p.m. Friday on Field 6 and will feature the Kingston American Legion Post 150 (the Fillies’ longtime sponsor) color guard, as well as the awarding of the Fillies’ inaugural Rebecca Brownstone Memorial Scholarshi­p to a graduating 18U Fillies player who “has excelled both on and off the field.”

Brownstone, a member of the Fillies’ original 1996 team, died from cancer in 2015.

Play begins 6:30 p.m. Friday with six Fillies teams in action.

The 10U Fillies open play against the Mid-Hudson Rebels on Field 4, while the Fillies and Rebels square off in a 12U game on Field 3. The Fillies face the Saugerties Cruisers in a 14U game on Field 5, while the 18U Fillies play the Electric City Bombers on Field 10.

A pair of Fillies’ squads will

compete in the 16U bracket, with the Fillies/Duffy squad playing the East Coast Storm on Field 7, while the Fillies/Spriggs team squares off with the Northeast Lightning on Field 8.

Joining the Fillies and Rebels in the 8-team 10U bracket are OC Bombers, Northern Columbia Chaos, Crusaders Black, Frozen Ropes, Paupack Attack and Classie Lassie, while the 8-team 12U bracket consists of the Fillies, Rebels, HV Panthers, Beacon Xtreme, Lady Cadets, Frozen Ropes, Tri-County Thunder and Lady Bobcats.

The Fillies and Cruises are joined in the 12-team 14U bracket by the Rebels, Brewster Rockets, Crusaders Black, Lady Fury, Lady Bombers, Tri-County Thunder, CT Hornets, NJ Rangers, Shepaug Storm and Pascack Valley Elite, while the 10-team 16U bracket consists of both Fillies’ squads, East Coast Storm and Northeast Lightning, along with MW Crusaders, HV Venom, Beacon Xtreme, NY Diamond Girls, Rapid Fire and Pro Swing Pride.

Joining the Fillies and Bombers in the 10-team 18U bracket are Dutchess Divas, Beacon Xtreme, HV Vengeance, HV Ladyhawks, MW Cusaders, Dutchess Debs, Lady Diamond Pros and NJB Bombers.

The 10U Fillies are 9-1 in their last 10 games, including a championsh­ip in the recent Miss Shen tournament. Their roster includes Gabriella Bonilla, Victoria Bonitz, Rebecca Brennan, Taylor Decker, Danielle DeGroodt, Addison MacDonald, Jennifer Nardelli, Delaney Pece, Molly Saunders and Gabriella Wilkins. The team is coached by Brian Pece and assisted by Annie Saunders.

The 11U squad consists of Eva Carbone, Piper DeKraai, Madalyn Dodig, Sophia Fromson, Maggie Habernig, Hurley Lattin, Emily Lawrence, Caitlyn Sindt, Sydney Slimak and Grace Terpening. The teams is coached by Jody Fromson and assisted by Rich Terpening and Rob Slimak.

The 14U squad has a 3928-3 record and has runner-up finishes in the Montgomery Madness, Lucky Ladies Invitation­al, Delaware Rover Bash and Hartford Firecracke­r tournament­s, as well as a third-place finish in the Fillies Spring into Summer event. The roster consists of Paige Bell, Ella Cappillino, Jordan Carbone, Christie Collins, Abi Finch, Ava Guralnick, Abby Lee, Rileigh Meyer, Jackie Rometo, Mary Sadowski, Sydney Shuta, Kristiana Wilson and Jade Winters. They are coached by Kendra Bell, assisted by Jake Guralnick.

The 15U squad (competing as the Fillies/ Duffy team this weekend), which has competed in a 16U schedule, has a tournament title in the CT Fastpitch Nation Midnight Madness event, as well as runner-up finishes in the Tri-State Angels and Knights of Columbus tournament­s. The team, coached by Chad Duffy and assisted by Chris Novotony and Tim Lukaszewsk­i, consists of Victoria DeMercurio, Alivia Duffy, Ryan Fitzgerald, Jessica Kreck, Kailyn Lukaszewsk­i, Bianca Novotony, Tori Ost, Erin Ricks, Grace Tremper and Nicole Van Voorhis.

The 16U team (competing as the Fillies/Spriggs squad this tournament) has played primarily in 18U tournament­s as a college showcase team. They are currently 44-12, with championsh­ips in the Spring Into Summer showcase, as well as bracket titles in both the September Showdown and Home Run showcases.

The roster consists of Shannon Bonewit, Sydney Bonewit, Vanessa Brandt, Jessica Chilcott, Kailey Collins, Tori Decker, Ashley DeKraai, Claire Filak, Alyssa Finno, Alex McKearin and Megan Peace. They are coached by Rick Spriggs and assisted by Trishann Hayes.

The 18U squad is 24-15, including a second-place finish in the recent Tradition College Showcase. The roster, which features current college players or high school players who have selected their college, consists of Kacie Allison, Adrianna Crimi, Karly Giancola, Kiana Harris, Mariel Mustello, Rachel Nielsen, Shawna Smith, Skyler Sprance, Kelsey Trudden, Angela Van Pelt and Jacorra Webb. The teams is coached by Scott Van Pelt and assisted by Mike Nielsen.

The 12U Fillies, not competing in this tournament since they are at the USSSA Nationals in Salisbury, Maryland, are 54-14, including championsh­ips in the Long Island Fastpitch, Deb’s Mother’s Day, Frozen Ropes Classic, Firecracke­r on the 4th and the Rebels Rumble tournament­s and a runner-up finish in the Showdown at the Rock. The squad, coached by Marc Canino and assisted by Tony Marcano, consists of Emmie Cabrera, Jaidyn Canino, Ryanne Conde, Kasey Conn, Carly Correa, Ava Del Salto, Alex Frenza, Isabella Guleaglaya­n, Elysa Marcano, Courtney Meyer and Emma Schlagler.
