Top doubles seeds reach Ulster County finals

The top-seeded open men's doubles team of Shawn Holzmann and Dave Jutton advanced the final of the annual Ulster County Open Tennis Tournament at Forsyth Park.

KINGSTON, N.Y. » The topseeded open men’s doubles team of Shawn Holzmann and Dave Jutton advanced the final of the annual Ulster County Open Tennis Tournament at Forsyth Park.

Holzmann and Jutton earned wins over Finbar Stuart and Tristan Gill (61, 6-1) and Richard Juman and James Morrison (6-2, 6-2) to advance to the title match, where they face unseeded Don Guldi and Bill Blake. Jurman and Morrison reached the semis with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Andrew Catalano and Paul Larios.

Guldi and Blake advanced to the final by defeating No. 3 seeds Vern Chrisjohn and Vic Ricci (6-2, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and No. 2 seeds Tom Turco and Scott Taylor (64, 6-4) in the semifinals. Turco and Taylor reached the semifinals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 come-from-behind win over Jay Han and David White.

In open women’s doubles, the top-seeded team of Karen Gill and Ashley Haley earned a berth in the final against the No. 2 seeded team of Shannon Mulcahy an Yvonne Lenzen-Roth. Gil and Haley defeated Melissa Germano and Meghan Heller, 6-0, 6-1, in one semifinal, while Mulcahy and Lenzen-Roth swept Nok North and Peg Duke, 6-0, 6-1 in the other semifinal.

In open mixed doubles, Holzmann and Mulcahy earned a berth in the final with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brandon Belaski and Bailey Kretschmer, with Gill and Matt Canzonetti also advancing with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Blake and Lisa Cutten.

The top seeded men’s senior team of Turco and Ravi Ramaswami reached the final with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory over Han and Don Tegeler, while the unseeded team of Morrison and Juman upended the No. 2 team of Ricci and Chrisjohn, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 (tiebreaker).

In senior mixed doubles, Jody Mallen and Scott Mallen reached the final with victories over Andrea Grunblatt and Mark Grunblatt (63, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and Karen Reiner and Bob Witty (6-4, 6-4) in the semifinals. Also reaching the final was the team of Turco and Karla Wainwright, who swept Tammy Croote and Nick Malvai, 6-4, 6-3, in their semifinal.

In super senior doubles, Witty and Robert Goldberg will face Charlie Lay and Jim Donovan in the final. Witty and Goldberg swept Nelson DeWitt and Larry Arvidson, 6-3, 6-2, in one semifinal, while Lay and Donovan bounced Larry Shelton and John Shelton, 6-4, 6-3, in the other semifinal.
