Hommel ties for 13th in state amateur
Wiltwyck teen tops locals in annual event
Jake Hommel shot a 3-over-par 75 in the final round Wednesday as he tied for 13th place at the New York State Junior Amateur golf championships.
Hommel, who plays for the Wiltwyck Golf Club, finished with a two-day 76-75—151 in the event at Seven Oaks Golf Club.
He birdied the fourth, fifth and 13th holes and recorded nine pars for his 37-38—75 Wednesday. Homell, who tied for fifth in the 17-year-old age flight, had a dozen pars and a birdie en route to the 76 that had him tied for 21st five strokes back on Tuesday.
Reigning two-time Ulster County Amateur Men’s champion Justin Lane, who was just two shots back with a 71 after the first round, shot a 41-42— 83 in the second round and finished tied for 29th overall and was 10th in the age-17 flight.
Lane fell out of a contention with a front nine 5-over 41 that featured two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. He started the back nine with a 7 on the par-4 10th, but recovered with six pars on the final eight holes.
He started out strong in Tuesday’s opening round with bird-
ies on the second, third and fourth holes and was 1-under for the front nine.
He had a birdie, six pars, a bogey and a double bogey on the back.
Tyler Schaad of the Red Hook Golf Club tied for 51st overall and was 21st
in the 16-year-old flight with his two-day 82-79– 161. He birdied the first hole and had 11 pars in the second round.
Scott Kleeschulte, a Kingston High and Wiltwyck teammate of Hommel’s, tied for 58th overall and tied for 21st in the 17-age group with a 7885—163. He capped the second round with five pars plus a birdied on 14.
