Town hall listening session for vets on Aug. 2

POUGHKEEPS­IE, N.Y. » The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Hudson Valley Health Care System will be hosting a town hall listening session for veterans, family members and the public on Wednesday, Aug. 2nd, at 2 p.m., at the Dutchess County Emergency Response Center, 392 Creek Road.

Dutchess Office for Aging seeks people to deliver meals

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. » The Dutchess County Office for the Aging is looking for people who would like to help bring hot, nutritious midday meals to seniors who are unable to prepare their own.

People who are interested should call the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 or send an email to ofa@dutchessny.gov.

With the agency’s expansion of home-delivered meals to Fridays throughout the county, it is in need of additional volunteers to help with deliveries throughout the county on any weekday. There are particular areas of need in Beacon, East Fishkill, Pawling, Poughkeeps­ie, and the Amenia/Millerton area of northeaste­rn Dutchess.

Foster Grandparen­t program offers volunteer opportunit­ies

HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. » The WestCOP Foster Grandparen­t Program has volunteer opportunit­ies for low-income senior citizens.

The program places eligible seniors in academic settings to work with young people in Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, Putnam and Westcheste­r counties.

A Foster Grandparen­t volunteer must be a minimum of 55 years of age and income eligible (for a family of 1, cannot exceed $24,120). Volunteers receive a tax-free hourly stipend for their 15 to 40 hours of weekly service activities. The volunteers are also provided paid time off, holidays, sick leave and mileage reimbursem­ent.

Foster Grandparen­ts serve children who need some extra help in the classroom as a tutor and a mentor. They help children learn to read and discover math while assisting the teacher with a variety of other classroom activities. Currently, there are over 200 seniors serving hundreds of children in numerous Head Start centers, pre-schools and elementary schools throughout our WestCOP Foster Grandparen­t Program.

Senior groups list meeting schedules

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. » The Woodstock Senior Citizens Club will meet Wednesday, Aug. 2, at noon at Woodstock Fire Co. No. 1.

The guest speaker will be Lt. Wallace Fulford from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office. He will be speaking about the K-9 unit.

PORT EWEN, N.Y. » The Town of Esopus Seniors will meet Monday, Aug. 7, at noon at the Town of Esopus Beach Pavilion at George Freer Memorial Park. for a Kentucky Friend Chicken picnic. The event is weather-permitting.

The deadline to sign up for the picnic is Tuesday, Aug. 1. The cost is $5 per person. Advance notice and payment for the lunch is required. Call (845) 3317358 for more informatio­n.

A reminder that the bus for the luncheon cruise on Lake George will leave the Town Hall Community Center on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at precisely 8 a.m.

The Southern Tier Seniors will

meet on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. in the picnic area at the Clermont State Historic Site, 1 Clermont Ave., Germantown, for a social gathering.

Those planning to attend should bring lunch and a lawn chair and enjoy an afternoon with fellow group members overlookin­g the river.

Seats are still available for the following trips:

• Aug. 16, A barbecue & boat ride on Lake Hopatcong, NJ.

• Sept. 20, Friesians musical horse show, with lunch and area touring.

• Oct. 11, Octoberfes­t at the Royal Manor in New Jersey.

• Nov. 16, A holiday lunch and show at Stony Hill, N.J.

Meetings will resume at the Clermont Firehouse on Route 9G starting Sept. 6 with an ice cream social. All seniors are welcome to attend. Meetings take place the first Wednesday of each month.
