Grand jury indicts Ellenville man in alleged break-in, rape
A village man who allegedly raped a woman after breaking into her home as she slept was indicted Monday by an Ulster County grand jury, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office said Monday.
Jean Carlos Colon, 23, of 5 Glass St., was indicted on felony charges of rape and burglary, according to a press release.
The grand jury returned the two count indictment accusing Colon of breaking into a home and raping a 40-yearold woman, who had been asleep, in the early morning hours of June 23.
The indictment followed an investigation by Ellenville police with assistance from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, the state police and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
In the June 23 incident, police said, Colon fled when one of the victim’s two young daughters heard her mother’s screams and called out for her.
Village police said they identified Colon as a suspect, and within two hours he was arrested at the bus stop on Canal Street and charged with the felonies of rape, burglary and attempted criminal sexual act, and with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Colon was also arrested in May in connection with another forcible sex crime against a different victim in Ellenville, but both felony and misdemeanor charges arising out of that incident were dismissed by a previous grand jury, according to a press release.
After Colon’s arrest in May, Ellenville police said his victim, who he did not know, was walking near a taxi stand when she was approached by him. He allegedly pulled her down an alley and sodomized her several times before fleeing on a bicycle, police said at the time.
The woman, who went to police and reported the May incident, was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway campus in Kingston and treated for injuries, police said.
Special Victims Bureau Chief Katherine R. Van Loan, is handling the prosecution for the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office. Colon is represented by the Ulster County Public Defender’s Office.
