Dance company performs at PS21 Tent
As part of the Chatham Dance Festival, Caleb Teicher & Company will perform American tap dance, the Lindy hop and vernacular jazz in two performances under the Tent at PS21, 2980 state Route 66, Chatham, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 11 and 12.
“At the age of 17, Caleb Teicher began his career as a founding member of DorranceDance. He has since performed with Syncopated City Dance Company, The Bang Group, The Chase Brock Experience, and others,” PS21 founder Judy Grunberg said in a press release. “We saw Caleb and his company perform at the Hudson Valley Dance Festival last fall and fell in love with his work, which is highly inventive, accessible, and engaging.”
In 2016, Dance Magazine heralded Caleb Teicher & Company as an exciting new dance company to watch, and The New Yorker declared “Mixing super-charged energy with tossed-off charm, Teicher is among the more promising figures in tap dance.”
The PS21 program will include “Variations,” in which three tap dancers make Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” leap from the page; “Small & Tall,” in which “small” Macy Sullivan and “tall” Lindsey Jones pair up for a funny and heartwarming duet; and “Meet Ella,” in which Teicher collaborates with swing legend Nathan Bugh to riff to the music of Ella Fitzgerald.
Inspired by concert dance, musical theater and social dance, Teicher’s work addresses questions of how and why we dance. “We use traditional American dance forms to talk about modern American ideas,” Teicher said in the release. “While tap, swing, and jazz dance can often be used to remind us of earlier generations, we use these styles to reflect current ideas and emotions.”
