Free children’s activity at Cole site on Aug. 20

WHAT: Children’s activity WHEN: Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Thomas Cole National Historic Site, 218 Spring St., Catskill

DETAILS: The site will have a free Kids Paint Out. Children of all ages are invited to the site to explore the home and studios of the 19th century artist Thomas Cole and to paint the landscapes that inspired him to found the Hudson River School, America’s first major art movement. The event is free and all necessary materials will be provided. Advance reservatio­ns are appreciate­d, but drop-ins on the day of the event are welcome. Children must be accompanie­d by an adult.

Museum hosts talk about Civil War

WHAT: Talk about the Civil War WHEN: Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. WHERE: Time and the Valleys Museum, 332 Main St. (state Route 55), Grahams ville

DETAILS: Amateur historian, genealogis­t and former local resident Robert Day will talk about companies C and D of the 1st New York Mounted Rifles, as well as the effect of the Civil War on the tricounty area. Admission to the program is free for members and $3 for nonmembers. Refreshmen­ts and museum admission are included.
