Janet Abernethy, 91, of Kingston, N.Y., passed away on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at Woodland Pond in New Paltz.

She was born May 19, 1926, in Kingston to the late Thomas and Margaret (Leahy) Noble. She was married to Dr. Donald F. Abernethy on April 29, 1950. Dr. Abernethy passed away on Oct. 31, 2003.

Janet was a Kingston High School graduate, Class of 1942, and later graduated from Katharine Gibbs School in New York City and Ulster County Community College. She loved her years during the 1940s of living in Brooklyn and working in New York City.

She was a member of the Benedictin­e Hospital Auxiliary and volunteere­d at the Fred J. Johnston Museum. Janet enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, downhill and cross country skiing, ballroom dancing, and swimming at Williams Lake. She especially loved singing, especially show tunes and Irish songs.

She is survived by her children, Meg (Charles Lockmiller) America of West Palm Beach, Fla., Rose (David) Brelsford of Hyde Park, Ellen (Ron) Marshall of Hingham, Mass., and Jack (Rosie) Abernethy of New York City. She is also survived by her grandchild­ren, Kevin (Sarah) Brelsford, Jeffrey (Jessi) Brelsford, Steven (Bernadette) Brelsford, Alison (Armand) Guimont, Michael Lockmiller, Benjamin (Jenni) Marshall, Emily (Wes) Camp, Katherine Marshall, and Joe and Connor Abernethy; in addition to six greatgrand­sons, two sistersin-law, Rose Irvine and Doris Noble, and many nieces and nephews.

Entrusted to the care of A. Carr & Son Funeral Home, 65 Lucas Ave., Kingston, where friends and family may visit on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 242 Wall St., Kingston, N.Y. 12401. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering.
