Suspect held in Bank of America robbery

- Freeman staff

An Orange County man has been charged with robbing the Bank of America branch on Canal Street in Ellenville, village police said Wednesday evening.

Kip Banks Jr., 25, of 261 Bullville Road, Montgomery, was charged with robbery and violating parole, both felonies, police said.

Police said Banks was charged after five people were picked up Monday morning — three on Main Street in Grahamsville, Sullivan County, and two on First Street in Kerhonkson — and brought to the Ellenville police station.

Police said interviews of the five people led to the recovery of “significant physical evidence” connected to the Tuesday afternoon robbery and the arrest of Banks, who police said confessed.

Police did not say whether Banks was among the five people who were picked up or what evidence was recovered. Banks was the only person identified by police as being charged.

On Tuesday, police said a man entered the Bank of America branch at 83 Canal St. in Ellenville at 1:47 p.m., handed a teller a note demanding money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

No weapon was displayed, police said.

After his arrest Wednesday, Banks was arraigned and sent to the Ulster County Jail without bail, police said.

Police did not say why Banks was on parole.
