The accident, which happened about 7 a.m. on state Route 199, resulted in one car winding up on its roof.

One driver was hospitalized in critical condition after a two-car, headon crash early Wednesday on state Route 199, according to a Milan Fire Department official.

The crash, which caused one of the vehicles to overturn, happened at 7 a.m. just west of Wilcox Park, said Jeffrey Galm, the department’s second assistant chief.

Steven Destefano, 35, of New Windsor, was thrown from the vehicle he was driving and suffered critical injuries, according to Galm and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. Destefano was flown by helicopter to Albany Medical Center.

The other driver, Andrew Pierce, 48, of Pine Plains, was taken by ambulance to MidHudson Regional Medical Center in Poughkeepsie with minor injuries and in stable condition, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office said Pierce was wearing a seat belt and Destefano was not. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Destefano was eastbound on Route 199 in a 1999 Subaru Legacy when he crossed over the double yellow line and struck Pierce’s westbound 2015 Nissan Versa. The Subaru overturned after the crash and came to rest on its roof, off the side of the road.

Route 199 near the accident scene was closed for more than four hours after the crash.
