Shirley Stokes, 77, of Cottekill

COTTEKILL » Shirley Stokes (Countryman) passed away peacefully Sept. 1, 2017, at Vassar Bros. Medical Center in Poughkeeps­ie, surrounded by family. She was 77 years of age.

Shirley was born May 23, 1940, to the late Clarence and Rose North Burgher in West Shokan, N.Y.

She is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Larry Stokes; sons, Donald Countryman (Joan), Dana Countryman (Dawn), William Countryman; stepson, Larry Stokes; stepdaught­er, Angela Rion; sister, Betty Skapetis (John); brother, Vernon Burgher; several grandchild­ren, greatgrand­children, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, a son, Michael Countryman (Paulette), died Jan. 17, 1999.

Shirley was an amazing baker, she loved country music and cowboys, fairs, and horses, and most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandkids. She was a lifelong Ulster County resident; she worked at the Corner Store in Stone Ridge, Dyno Nobel in Port Ewen and at Charles River in Stone Ridge. Shirley had a passion for people and animals; she was always kind, gentle and positive. She will be missed dearly.

Shirley will be buried next to her son in Fairview Cemetery, Stone Ridge, during a private ceremony.

There will be no calling hours.
