Child car seat check at ShopRite Sept. 17

The New Paltz Police Department will be participat­ing in National Child Passenger Safety Week which runs from Sept. 17 through 23.

As part of their effort, the New Paltz Police Department will be conducting a child passenger safety check on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ShopRite supermarke­t,, 258 Main St., New Paltz. The checkpoint will be in the northeast corner of the parking lot.

Safety seat technician­s from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and SUNY Ulster will assist with the safety seat check.

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13, according to a press release from the New Paltz Police Department.

No appointmen­t is necessary for the seat check. However, appointmen­ts can be made for child seat inspection­s and installati­ons at the New Paltz Police Department throughout the year by calling (845) 255-1323.

Chronic disease workshop offered

The YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County will offer a free chronic disease self management workshop for individual­s with chronic conditions including asthma, hypertensi­on, COPD, heart disease, arthritis chronic fatigue, and obesity. Caregivers and those who know someone with a chronic disease are also welcome.

The six-week workshop, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Oct. 4 to Nov. 8, is open to YMCA members and non-members.

An informatio­n session will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at the YMCA, 507 Broadway, for those interested in learning more about the workshop.

The program will teach participan­ts techniques to manage symptoms, provide healthstyl­e tips in exercise, nutrition, and stress management and help participan­ts reach their goals.
