Woodstock resident Sandra Cassese has received the Volunteer Award for Excellence in Advocacy from the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network.
Cassese was honored Sunday in Washington for her efforts to help make cancer a national priority.
The award was presented as part of the annual association’s leadership summit and lobby day, attended by more than 700 cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones, who urged elected officials to make cancer a national priority, according to a press release.
Each year, a volunteer who has demonstrated strong, consistent leadership advocating for cancer-related public policy receives the Excellence in Advocacy award.
The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network says it is supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to bring an end to cancer. The group describes Cassese as a volunteer leading grass-roots activities in the community and attending meetings with local lawmakers about the organization’s priority legislative issues.
Cassese serves as treasurer of the organization’s board of directors and is vice president for oncology services at HealthQuest. Her son-in-law, Jon, died of cancer in 2015.
