Girl, 6, thrown from pickup in crash
A 6-yearold girl who was thrown from the front seat of a pickup driven by her father in a two-vehicle rollover crash was airlifted to the Westchester Medical Center and was in stable condition, police said Tuesday.
Police are still investigating whether child restraints in the pickup were “appropriate for the age and size” of the driver’s two children, said New Paltz Police Lt. Rob Lucchesi. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor in the crash, he said, but police are investigating whether speed or driver inattention might have contributed to the accident.
About 5 p.m. Monday, the girl’s father, identified by New Paltz police only as a 39-year-old area resident, was northbound in a 2005 Dodge Ram near 21 South Putt Corners Road when it struck a northbound 2005 Nissan Altima that had stopped in traffic, Lucchesi said.
He said the pickup then rolled over and landing on the east shoulder of the road.
The 21-year-old female driver of the Nissan, also identified only as an area resident, was taken to a hospital with a minor laceration and complaining of pain, Lucchesi said. He said there were no passengers in her car.
The father and his younger child, also in the truck, were evaluated at the scene by the New Paltz Rescue Squad and released, Lucchesi said.
No tickets had been issued as of Tuesday afternoon.
