Sue Sullivan drops out of race against Faso
The field of Democrats who plan to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. John Faso has shrunk by one.
The field of Democrats who have announced plans to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. John Faso in next year’s 19th Congressional District race has shrunk by one.
On Monday, Sue Sullivan of Plattekill announced she was withdrawing from the race.
“I’ve made the decision to withdraw my candidacy after assessing my ability, as a first-time candidate, to raise the resources necessary to win this election,” Sullivan said in a letter to supporters. “We live in a political fundraising environment that dictates more time is spent on raising money than talking to people about the issues that affect our lives.”
Sullivan, 52, had announced her candidacy in May. At the time, she said she wanted to put her experience in economic development, health care, environmental protection and small business to work for the Mid-Hudson district.
“Throughout my professional life, I’ve brought people together to solve problems and create real positive change for my community,” Sullivan said. “I’m smart and tenacious. I fight for what I believe in. I will continue to work to make the 19th Congressional District a healthier, more economically robust region. I will continue to advocate for women and will encourage and stand behind those women who run for office.”
Faso, R-Kinderhook, is a former minority leader of the state Assembly who was elected to is first twoyear term in the House last November.
Still seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Faso are: Jeffrey Beals of Woodstock; Steven Brisee of Walden; David Clegg of Woodstock; Antonio Delgado of Rhinebeck; Bryan Flynn of Elka Park; Gareth Rhodes of Kerhonkson; and Pat Ryan, a Kingston-native who lives in Brooklyn.
New York’s 19th Congressional District comprises all of Ulster, Greene and Columbia counties, most of Dutchess County and some or all of seven other counties.
