Six-term incumbent Ulster County Legislator Dean Fabiano is seeking a seventh two-year term on as a county lawmaker.

Fabiano, a Republican who also has the Conservative and Independence lines on the November ballot, is running unopposed for the District 3 seat.

He said his top priority in the upcoming term will be to step up county efforts to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic and called for a collaboration between law enforcement, educators and government officials to work together to confront the issue.

In order to attract more well-paying jobs to the county, Fabiano said developers and environmentalists have to find “common ground and work together.” He pointed to the loss of Niagara Bottling, which had proposed to open a bottling plant in the town of Ulster as the kinds businesses that are lost when those two sides fail to work together.

“As the representative for part of the town of Ulster, we cannot continue to let good opportunities like this slip away,” he said. As chairman of the Legislature’s Public Works and Capital Projects Committee, Fabiano said he has worked to ensure a “true commitment” to improving the county’s infrastructure. “My goal is to continue to move those important projects forward,” he said.

A lifelong county resident, Fabiano, 58, is a machine operator with the Saugerties Highway Department. He is a 1977 graduate of Saugerties High School and a member of the town Republican Committee, the Saugerties Sons of the American Legion, the Saugerties Lion’s Club, Saugerties Elks Lodge and the Glasco Fire Department.

He and his wife Lori have two adult children.

Fabiano is one of seven incumbent county lawmakers in the 23-seat body running unopposed for re-election in November.

The Legislature’s District 3 seat comprises portions of the towns of Saugerties and Ulster.
