At speeds exceeding 100 mph, a Montgomery County man led state troopers on a 31-mile chase north from the town of Ulster after he was stopped for a speeding violation Sunday night, police said Monday.

The driver then struck a marked state police patrol car at 90 miles per hour, state police Senior Investigator Peter Kusminsky said Monday.

Initially, Kristopher J. Arco, 30, of Fort Plain, was stopped by state police on the thruway in the town of Ulster for a speeding violation, but he fled the scene driving north, Kusminsky said.

He said both the trooper driving the patrol car and Arco were not injured in the collision because both were traveling at high speed and in the same direction. He said the patrol car was “damaged, but not totalled.”

Kusminsky did not know what kind of car Arco was driving.

Arco led troopers into Coxsackie and refused to stop until he ran over spike strips that are used to puncture a vehicle’s tires.

At about 8:35 p.m., Arco was arrested and charged with the felony of reckless endangerment and the misdemeanors of unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, criminal mischief and reckless driving, along with the violations of possession of marijuana and multiple vehicle and traffic violations, according to the press release.

He was arraigned in Coxsackie Town Court and sent to the Greene County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
