Pine Bush and its running game put a damper on Kingston High’s Homecoming Game on Saturday as the Bushmen defeated the Tigers 28-7 in a Section 9, Class AA Division I football game at Dietz Stadium.

The contest was the culmination of the Tigers’ Homecoming weekend and a halftime devoted to the unveiling of the Kingston High Athletic Hall of Fame’s inaugural class.

The 16 inductees (Hobie Armstrong, Doreen Benes Harney, Vivian “Pat” Burke, Willard Burke, Ertha Burris, Billy Costello, Vincent DeLuca, Jerry Drake, Mike Ferraro, Tay Fisher, Michael Hoffman, Thomas Maines, Kerry Purvis Schultz, Ron Scheffel, Keith Simmons and Joe Uhl) were introduced.

The official induction was held at a banquet Saturday night.

Pine Bush spoiled the day by rushing the ball 44 times for 366 yards. Anthony Potts led the way, running 19 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Fullback Tyrese Gumbs had 94 yards and one TD and Tyler Waller ran for 93.

The Bushmen improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the division. Kingston finished with an 0-4 mark in the division and are now 0-6 overall.

“Our goal was to come in, clean

up the mistakes that constantly plague us and give ourselves our chance,” Kingston coach Quintin Johnson said. “We had a slow start. The Homecoming festivities, the emotion, I think everything else kind of contributes to that, so we had a slow start and we just never caught up.”

Caleb Stevens’ interception of Tiger quarterback Chapman Parker set up Pine Bush’s first score: Potts’ 2-yard TD run late in the first quarter. Potts tallied again on a 44-yard sprint on the opening play of the second quarter.

Kingston had its opportunities, but the Tigers seemed to be a move, a stride or a missed tackle away from capitalizing. Darius Gray started the game with a 48-yard kickoff return, but Kingston couldn’t convert. Everything the Tigers got was hard earned. JaVar Tinsley fought for 50 yards on 20 carries. Parker completed 7-of-19 passes for 53 yards.

“We’re struggling to put drives together. We have several guys injured,” Johnson noted. “We’re shuffling the o-line and we’re shuffling the receivers.”

Trailing 14-0 early in the second quarter, Kingston faced a third-and-long at midfield. Two blitzers came up the middle and Parker threw over their out-stretched hands. Beyond them, however, was 297-pound defensive tackle Jaycee Miller, who intercepted and rambled 38 yards for a pick-6.

It became 28-0 when Gumbs scored on a 1-yard plunge early in the second half.

Mahki Matthews’ 45yard return on the ensuing kick led to Kingston’s only score. The Tigers started on the Pine Bush 41 and grinded out a six-minute, 12-play drive.

Tinsley’s 11-yard run converted a fourth-down. Holding and false-start penalties then caused a thirdand-22. Parker extended the play, scrambling toward the Tiger sideline to throw and drew a late hit call. That made it third-and-7 and Manny Wilson swept 13 yards for a first down. Parker eventually dove behind left tackle Cody Sweeney for a 1-yard score on fourth-and-goal.

The Tigers threatened again in the fourth when Gray recovered a muffed punt. A goal-line stand stopped them on the 3.

“It’s going to take time. It’s a process. Winning is a process and we’re learning and we’re continuing to take the steps in the process to try and get this thing going,” Johnson said.

“We’re taking the best shot these teams have to give and we’re not getting knocked out. We fall down, but we get back up. We’re going to keep doing that. With the exception of the first game, every game we’ve gone into the fourth quarter with an opportunity to come out with a win and that’s our goal.

“The kids fought, which is what they’ve been doing since we started this thing,” he said. “Our hope is that their fight can be rewarded with a win.
