KINGSTON, N.Y. » Seven bids to reroof the city’s wastewater treatment plant were received, and each came in below the $500,000 estimated cost.

The bids were opened Friday, with the lowest one coming in at a total of $264,210 from More Roofing. The highest bid was submitted by Silktown Roofing in the total amount of $487,000. Those bids each include a $15,000 contingency fund.

Other total bids included $302,600 from Young Developers LLC; 348,875 from General Roofing Contractors; $440,000 from United Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc.; $444,000 from Titan Roofing; and $448,000 from Precision Roofing.

City Engineer Ralph Swenson said Friday he was not yet sure which of the seven bidders would be awarded the contract.

Earlier in the week, the city Common Council’s Finance and Audit Committee adopted a resolution authorizing the roofing contract to be awarded to the lowest responsible bidder and for Mayor Steve Noble to sign the associated agreements. That resolution must still be voted on by the full council, which meets again Nov. 14.

City Engineering Technician Alan Adin told the committee on Wednesday that aldermen had previously approved spending up to $570,000 for the roofing work at the plant on East Strand. He said the request to authorize the contract before the bids were received was made because the city wanted to have the work done before the end of the year.

“This is just to expedite the process,” Adin said.

Adin also said if the bids came in at more than $570,000, the city would have to re-evaluate them or come back to the committee for approval.

In other business, the committee authorized transferring $28,000 in the budget for the wastewater treatment plant to pay for the repair of blowers that are used for aeration during the biological treatment of sewage.
