Marlboro's Messenger wins MHAL singles title

Marlboro High's Grace Messenger, who has three Mid-Hudson Athletic League doubles titles with older sister Emma, added a singles crown to her collection, defeating Wallkill's Emily Savage in the finals.

Marlboro High’s Grace Messenger, who has three Mid-Hudson Athletic League doubles titles with older sister Emma, added a singles crown to her collection Friday.

With Emma off to college, Messenger remained in the singles draw and took the championsh­ip with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over top-seeded Emily Savage of Wallkill.

A new pair of sisters claimed the doubles crown, with Cynthia and Emily Ma of Spackenkil­l defeating Roosevelt’s Wiliana Lundy and Lex Pattershal­l 6-3, 6-1.

Messenger, a junior, became Marlboro’s first singles champ since Elora Benfer won it in 2007-08. She advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 7-5 win over second-seeded Natalie Meyer of New Paltz, while Savage downed Roosevelt’s Ashleigh Dolan 6-3, 6-2.

The Mas defeated No. 2 Samantha Jaros and Ava Del Salto of Marlboro 6-1, 6-2 in the semis. Lundy and Pattershal­l ousted topseeded Sneha Kamada and Udaya Rattan of Spackenkil­l 6-3, 6-1 to make the finals.

In the consolatio­n finals for third place, Meyer defeated Dolan 6-4, 6-0, while Jarros and Del Salto downed Kamada and Rattan 6-2, 6-4.

Every player that reached the quarterfin­als qualified for the Section 9 tournament, which will take place Tuesday and Wednesday at the Match Point Sports Complex in Goshen.
