constructo­r Brent Sverdloff will demystify the puzzle creation process. Learn about theme developmen­t, clue writing, grid making, online and print resources, constructi­on software, and submission guidelines. Bring any favorite puzzles, your imaginatio­n, and thoughtful questions. Sverdloff lives in Rhinebeck and has had his crosswords appear in The New York Times, The New York Sun and the Penguin Classics anthology of literary-themed crosswords.

The Moonlights perform Oct. 20 in Woodstock

WHAT: Performanc­e by The Moonlights WHEN: Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.

WHERE: Woodstock Library, 5 Library Lane, Woodstock

DETAILS: The Moonlights, a collaborat­ion between songwriter­s Rachel Loshak and Dean Jones, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to come at 6 p.m. to create a pre-performanc­e secret craft. Jones has been creating music for families for many as a solo artist and with the band Dog on Fleas. He has produced many successful children’s music artists, including Frances England, Elizabeth Mitchell and Gustafer Yellowgold. He has also produced multiple Grammy-nominated albums in the Best Children’s category. Loshak has been writing and performing original material for 20 years as a singer/songwrited/bassist. She has performed and collaborat­ed on projects with Nora Jones, Moby, Natalie Merchant, Chris Ballew and many others. All ages are invited and admission is free.

Talk will examine reservoir’s constructi­on

WHAT: Talk, “Building the Ashokan Reservoir — A History”

WHEN: Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

WHERE: Rosendale Library, 264 Main St., Rosendale

DETAILS: Historian Frank Almquist will give a talk titled “Building the Ashokan Reservoir — A History.” In 1913, the Olivebridg­e Dam was sealed. It created the reservoir that provides New York City with up to 40 percent of its fresh water. The story begins in 1899, when surveyors chose the site along the Esopus Creek. But it was also home to more than 2,300 residents. Almquist described the engineerin­g feat of the century using modern techniques and local material, and how the building of the reservoir affected its engineers, workers and residents. Admission is free.
