Auction canceled for Cubs 2016 World Series ring

An official 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series ring that was offered for sale on an auction website has been taken off the market.

Leland’s Auctions said Monday that it removed the ring from auction at the request of the Cubs and “due to a contractual issue.” The team initially raised questions about the ring’s authenticity. Cubs spokesman Julian Green later said the team worked with Leland’s to verify the ring was genuine and given to a scout.

Green says the Cubs have “identified the scout who no longer works for the ballclub.” The scout’s name wasn’t on the auction listing. Green says the ring “was not authorized for sale per the contract with associates.”

The ring had 214 diamonds. The team’s championship ended a 108-year drought.

Probe prompts soulsearching across programs

The federal corruption scandal enveloping college basketball has led more than two dozen prominent schools to review their programs and triggered uncomfortable soul-searching among the institutions at the heart of the sport.

The future is at stake for a business that will produce $19.6 billion in TV money over the span of 22 years ending in 2032 for the NCAA Tournament, known to the public simply as March Madness.

The Associated Press asked 84 top basketball school and six conferences about their response to the arrests that upended college hoops just before its new season. More than two dozen schools say they responded to the bribery scandal by conducting internal reviews of their compliance operations.

Al Michaels sorry for ‘SNF’ Weinstein joke

NBC play-by-play man Al Michaels has quickly apologized after making a joke about Harvey Weinstein during “Sunday Night Football.”

Michaels mused in the middle of the third quarter of the game between the New York Giants and Denver Broncos that the Giants were “coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein.” His on-air partner Cris Collinsworth replied with a laugh and told Michaels “only my L.A. guy comes up with that one.”

The comment got a negative reaction on social media and Michaels apologized in the fourth quarter for “being a little flip” with his reference to Weinstein, who faces sexual misconduct allegations. Michaels added that “it was not meant in that manner.”
