Carlos A. Lavarreda, MD, 81, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2017. He was born in Guatemala on May 31, 1936, to Dr. Alfonso Lavarreda and Amparo Reyes.

Dr. Lavarreda attended The University of San Carlos Medical School in Guatemala and in 1963 he moved to the United States and began his internship at Worcester Memorial Hospital. He then completed his Surgical residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass.

He completed his Cardiovasc­ular residency at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven, Conn. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was in private practice in Saugerties, N.Y., and Kingston, N.Y. He joined the U.S. Air Force and retired as Colonel in 1995 after 25 years of service.

He was a true Renaissanc­e man as he truly loved classical music, philosophy, and traveling the world.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Georgia; one son, Ricardo Enrique Lavarreda of Kingston, N.Y.; stepson, Jason Collins and Jennifer of Goldsboro, N.C.; stepdaught­er, Kimberly Davis and Matthew of Willow Springs, N.C.; and brothers, Luis, Jorge, and Guillermo Lavarreda of Guatemala. Also he is survived by two adorable stepgrandc­hildren, Kearney Allen and Cora Elizabeth Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Carlos Jr.

A memorial service will be held at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.
