David A. Sheeley, 71, of Cottekill
David A. Sheeley of Cottekill, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at the age of 71.
He was the son of the late Anne Service Sheeley and Croswell Sheeley.
David was born on June 8, 1946, in Kingston, N.Y.
He attended Rondout Valley High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from SUNY Oswego. He began his career with Kingston Cablevision then worked for Brinnier and Larios, focusing on urban renewal in downtown Kingston. He then owned and operated D.A. Sheeley Construction, which specialized in installing and maintaining large municipal water systems. He became Town of Marbletown Highway Superintendent in 1986, a post he held for 18 years. During his time as Highway Superintendent, he was instrumental in the development of the Marbletown Rail Trail. In 2004, Dave became Commissioner of Public Works for Ulster County, where he worked until his retirement in 2014. He was also a partner in the Rondout Golf Club.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; two sons, Michael Sheeley (Marta) of Gulfport, Miss., and Daniel Sheeley of Cottekill, N.Y. (with his first wife and longtime friend, Karen Sheeley); three stepchildren, Amy (Carmen), Lisa (John) and Bradley. He was blessed to have a granddaughter, Samanta Anne, and five step-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Sue Sheeley; and five nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by his brother, Garin.
Calling hours will be held at George Moylan Funeral Home, 2053 Route 32, Rosendale, N.Y., on Monday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m., with a service at 5 p.m. The Rev. Arlene Dawber will officiate. All are welcome to join the family at the Marbletown Community Center immediately after the service.
