Kingston standout Section 9 MVP

Champion Tigers, Rondout, Red Hook highlight coaches’ All-Star selections

KINGSTON, N.Y. » Kingston’s Abbie Mayone was named Most Valuable Player, while Red Hook’s Cari Meltzer was named Coach of the Year by Section 9 field hockey coaches.

In addition, Mayone and Tigers’ teammate Grace Gavis, along with Rondout Valley’s Paige Bogart, Spackenkil­l’s Elizabeth Schwoerer and Webutuck’s Taylor Edmundson earned All-State accolades.

A pair of players each from reigning Section 9 champions Kingston, Rondout and Red Hook topped the All-Star firstteam squad.

Gavis and Alexandra Lettre were selected to the first team for the Class A champion Tigers, while Bogart and Erin Weinmann were named from the Class C champion Ganders. Ally McCrudden and Danielle Walsh earned first-team accolades for the Class B titlist Raiders.

Kingston, Rondout and Red Hook will compete in regionals Sunday at Dietz Stadium. The Tigers square off with Maine-Endwell at noon. The Raiders face Vestal at 2 p.m., while the Ganders oppose Whitney Point at 4.

Also named to the first team

were Schwoerer, Edmundson, Ellenville’s Mia Unverzagt, Onteora’s Lola Manieri and Pine Plains’ Cortney Conley.

A trio of Ganders and a

pair of Tigers highlighte­d the second team, with Courtney Coffey, Courtney Smith and Lea Smith representi­ng Rondout and Brooke Gastin and Meghan Gavis representi­ng Kingston.

Brittany VandeMark and Brittany Vazquez made the second team for

lone goal for (5-9) Smithtown Christian, while Aydin Olgun stopped 10 shots in the loss.

Pine Bush, joined by Pine Plains’ Claire Norman, Ellenville’s Megan Eckert, Maddie Wood of Onteora and Elissa Rhynders of Red Hook.

Rhinebeck’s Grace Johnson and Sarah Wood highlighte­d the third team, while Helen Deretchin and Carlee Sherman represente­d the Lady Bushmen. Rounding out the third team were the Tigers’ Gannon Riley, the Ganders’ MacKenzie Handshuh, Red Hook’s Bailey Jordan, Ellenville’s Savannah James,

Pine Plains’ Olivia Trevena, Spackenkil­l’s Zohra Khan and Webutuck’s Sophia Caldas.

Making up the honorable mention squad were Kingston’s Bridge Loughlin, Rondout’s Kiernan McColgan, Red Hook’s Paige Scott, Rhinebeck’s Elizabeth Rosenzweig, Onteora’s Ryan Wright, Ellenville’s Jakiaya Richardson, Pine Plains’ Holly Bay, Spackenkil­l’s Cassidy Gent, Webutuck’s Jemini Kilmer, and Pine Bush’s Meghan Hennig.
