- Freeman staff

Ulster County lawyer Julian D. Schreibman has beaten Colonie Town Justice Peter G. Crummey in the race a state Supreme Court judgeship in New York’s Third Judicial District.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Schreibman had 101,017 votes to Crummey’s 96,041, according to unofficial results.

Schreibman will succeed retiring state Justice Karen Peters, a fellow Ulster County resident.

“I’m extremely grateful to the voters in the Third Judicial District for entrusting me with this important role,” Schreibman said in an mailed statement Wednesday. “... I’m looking forward to the opportunity to serve our communities and will work hard to earn the confidence the voters have shown in me.”

The Third Judicial District comprises Ulster, Greene, Columbia, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Sullivan and Albany counties.

Schreibman, 44, is an Ulster Park resident who received his juris doctor from Yale Law school in 1997. He is a partner in the law firm of Wachtel Missry, LLP.

Schreibman has a 20year career in public service and private practice, which includes time spent as senior assistant district attorney in Ulster County. He said a majority of his private practice work has been in state Supreme Court.

A Democrat, Schreibman also was nominated by the Working Families Party.

Schreibman won Ulster County with 26,411 votes to Crummey’s 18,922.

State Supreme Court justices are elected to 14-year terms and generally preside over civil matters; divorce, separation and annulment proceedings; and sometimes criminal prosecutions of felonies.

Currently, state Supreme Court justices are paid $193,000 annually. New York mandates that state Supreme Court judges retire no later than the end of the year in which they turn 70.

Crummey, 61, is an Albany resident who received his juris doctor from Albany Law School. He has been Colonie town justice for 18 years and is a privatepractice attorney.

A Republican, Crummey was also nominated by the Conservative, Independence and Reform parties.
