Baden breezes past Bernardo in supervisor election
Mike Baden will succeed Carl Chipman as town supervisor, according to Tuesday’s unofficial election results.
Baden received 1,365 votes to defeat Len Bernardo, who received 900.
Baden, who ran on the Democratic, Working Families and Green party lines, will serve a two-year term.
Chipman chose not to seek re-election.
Bernardo and his wife, Terry, a former Ulster County Legislature chairwoman, have both mounted unsuccessful election bids to become Ulster County executive in the past 10 years.
In the race for two seats on the Rochester Town Board, incumbent Bea Haugen-Depuy and Chris Hewitt were elected to fouryear terms. Haugen-Depuy, who has been on the board since February 2017, received 1,324 votes, while Hewitt drew 1,129. Trailing were Michael Sommer with 1,036 votes and Randall Wynkoop with 875.
Haugen-Depuy ran on the Democratic and Conservative lines, while Hewitt ran on the Democratic, Working Families and Green lines.
In the race for highway superintendent, incumbent Tony Spano received 1,248 votes to defeat challenger Karl Baker, who received 995. Spano, who resigned from the Town Board to take the highway superintendent position, secured his first full two-year term. He ran on the Democratic line.
In the race for town justice, incumbent Paul Shaheen received 1,334 votes to defeat challenger Vincent Nigro Sr. who received 922. Shaheen ran on the Democratic Party line to secure another four-year term. He has been town justice since 2009.
In the only uncontested election, Town Clerk and Tax Collector Kathleen Gundberg received 2,156 votes to secure her third four-year term.
