Olive Free Library hosts radio program recreation
Go back to a time long before iPhones when life was simpler when the Olive Free Library, 4033 Route 28A, West Shokan, hosts a live recreation of an episode of the radio program “Fibber McGee and Molly.”
Performances will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.
A staple of the NBC network for the show’s entire run and one of the most popular and enduring radio comedy series of its time, “Fibber McGee & Molly” ran as a standalone series from 1935 to 1956. The show followed the adventures of a working-class couple, the habitual storyteller Fibber McGee and his sometimes terse but always loving wife, Molly, living among their numerous neighbors and acquaintances, including Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve and Wallace Wimple in the community of Wistful Vista.
The show spawned a national catchphrase, “T’aint funny, McGee.” Another trademark of the show was the crashing avalanche that happened whenever Fibber opened the hall closet.
Many cast members are local residents of the town of Olive. They will perform three separate radio comedies in an intimate atmosphere.
The play will be directed by Linda Burkhardt. She has directed numerous productions at the library and for the Shandaken Theatrical Society.
A donation of $15 is suggested for the general public, with a donation of $12 for students and seniors.
