Mount Academy boys win state title
Mount Academy’s boys captured its second state cross country championship Saturday.
The Eagles won the Class C crown for the first time in five years, when they won in Class D, as it topped a field of 11 teams while dealing with frigid temperatures and a muddy course in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet at Wayne High.
Travis Meier led Mount Academy, placing seventh in 17:26.8. He was followed by teammates Tristan Moody (14th, 17:34.5), Darren Baird (17th, 17:38.2), Adam King (36th, 17:56.8), Eric Zumpe (45th, 18:10.5), Edwin Moody (46th, 18:11.2) and Nate Kurtz (78th, 19:00.4). The Eagles scored 50 points, outdistancing runnerup Watkins Glen (67).
Besides Meier, the only other local runner to place in the top 10 was Roosevelt’s Sarah Trainor, who was ninth in the Class A race with a 19:40.2 time.
Onteora’s girls competed in Class C, finishing 10th. The Indians were led by Lucci Robertson (62nd, 22:46.8), Brooklyn Zeh (71st, 22:59.6), Clara Flores-Reineinger (76th, 23:10.4),
Erin Downs (85th, 23:35.2), Sarah Chazik (106th, 24:34.9), Ashley Hilliard (109th, 24:52.7) and Felicia Ojarovsky (125th, 27:05.0).
In that same race, Rondout Valley’s Jennifer Callan (21:52.3) was 30th and Ellenville’s Ashley Rivera (23:26.0) placed 80th.
Roosevelt’s Liam Farrell (16:54.7) and Kingston’s Robert Becker (16:58.2) were 21st and 25th, respectively, in the Class A race.
The strong performance clinched a berth for Becker in next week’s Federation meet at Poughkeepsie’s Bowdoin Park.
Farrell’s time was the 33rd-best overall and the second in Section 9. Becker was 37th overall and third amongst section competitors.
In Class B boys, New Paltz’s Logan Linares (17:41.3) was 36th and Red Hook’s Jack Hobson (17:49.6) 43rd. The Class B girls race had Amelia St. John of New Paltz (22:41.0) 64th and Red Hook’s Sheena Dwyer-McNulty (23:18.7) 80th.
Onteora also had Satch Sumner-Waldman in the boys Class C race. He placed 32nd in 17:52.1.
