Inmate charged with assaulting prison officer
COXSACKIE, N.Y. » An inmate serving a four-year sentence for weapons possession and attempted robbery has been charged with felony assault after attacking several officers at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility in Greene County, according to state police and the union representing state corrections officers.
During a scuffle on Nov. 5, one officer’s hand was fractured, and she and another officer were taken to the Albany Medical Center for treatment, according to the New York State Corrections Officers Police Benevolent Association). Seven other officers were treated for “minor injuries” at the prison’s clinic, the union said.
In a press release issued Monday, the union said 21-yearold Daquan Monroe struck an officer in the face while being escorted back to a housing unit. The officer tried to control the inmate with a body hold, but Monroe resisted, causing the officer and inmate to fall down a flight of stairs, the press release said.
Monroe was charged by state police the next day with felony assault while in a correctional facility, according to Trooper Steven Nevel.
State police were unable to provide additional details Tuesday, Nevel said.
After the inmate and the officer fell down the stairs, Monroe broke free and two additional officers pursued him back to the housing area, the officers’ union said.
There, the union said, the inmate charged another officer but was quickly detained by multiple officers who placed him in mechanical restraints and escorted him to the clinic.
Monroe’s condition was not available Tuesday.
