League suspends Gronkowski for 1 game

The NFL suspended New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski one game for a late, gratuitous hit to the head of Buffalo defensive back Tre’Davious White.

White was lying face down on the sideline after intercepting a pass Sunday when Gronkowski body-slammed him, driving his forearm into White’s back and head. Gronkowski was called for unnecessary roughness, but because of retaliation from the Bills there was no penalty assessed.

After the game, which New England won 23-3, Patriots coach Bill Belichick appeared to apologize to Bills counterpart Sean McDermott. Gronkowski also apologized, saying he let his frustration get the better of him.

Gronkowski will miss New England’s game against Miami next Monday night.

Rose returns to Cavs to resume rehab on ankle

Derrick Rose ended his self-imposed separation from the Cavaliers.

The point guard, who has been dealing with a sprained left ankle for much of his first season with Cleveland, returned to the Cavs on Monday to resume rehab and treatment.

A frustrated Rose had left the team on Nov. 22 to contemplate his future, but he’s back and working toward a return to the floor.

Rose had been in contact with coach Tyronn Lue and general manager Koby Altman in recent days.

The conversations were described as “positive,” and the team said he will report to its Cleveland Clinic Courts training facility.

There is no timetable on when he’ll play.

UConn remains No. 1 after passing Notre Dame test

UConn passed its first major test of the season to stay No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll.

The Huskies (7-0) trailed No. 3 Notre Dame by 11 points in the fourth quarter before rallying for an 80-71 victory on Sunday. UConn remained the unanimous top team from the 32-member national media panel Monday.

Texas, Notre Dame, Louisville and South Carolina follow the Huskies as the top five teams were unchanged. Mississippi State, UCLA, Baylor, Oregon and West Virginia round out the top 10. Ohio State, which lost to No. 14 Duke, dropped four spots in the poll to 12th.

Green Bay entered the Top 25 for the first time this season at No. 23, replacing Marquette. The Phoenix beat the Golden Eagles on Saturday.
