Tax rates declining for most residents
Property tax rates will drop in most Ulster County municipalities next year.
The new rates are the result of a $324 million county budget adopted by the Legislature earlier this month that reduces the total amount to be generated by property taxes by two-tenths of 1 percent, to $76.7 million. County Executive Michael Hein is expected to sign the budget Thursday.
Only taxpayers in the towns of Kingston, Rochester and Shawangunk will see their property taxes rise next year, said county Budget Director Burt Gulnick. He attributed the increases to dips in the state-set equalization rate in each
of those communities.
“When the equalization rate goes down, the tax rate goes up,” Gulnick said.
Equalization rates are set by the state and are designed to account for differing assessment practices across municipal lines
and the assessed values of a property as it compares to market value.
