Area churches schedule Christmas services

Following is a list of Christmas services planned at area churches and all are welcome:

• Atonement Lutheran Church, 100 Market St., Saugerties, will have a Fourth Sunday in the Advent Season service with communion on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 9 a.m., with the Rev. Sonja Maclary presiding. At 8 p.m. that day, there will be a Christmas Eve family candleligh­t service with communion, with the Rev. Justin Johnson presiding. During the candle lighting, the first verse of “Silent Night” will be sung in German by Cipriana Costello.

• Clinton Alliance Church, 1192 Centre Road, Rhinebeck, will have Christmas Eve services on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. Each service will be 40 minutes and will include the singing of carols, a reading of the Christmas Story before closing with a special service of light. From 4 to 7 p.m., there will be train displays, cookies and hot cocoa for the children. There will be no admission fee to see the displays and no offering will be taken during the services.

• Cross Point Fellowship Church, 459 Hurley Ave., Hurley, will have a Christmas Eve candleligh­t service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

• Ellenville Reformed Church, 188 Canal St., Ellenville, will have a Christmas Eve service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 4 p.m. This is a change from previous years, when the service took place at 7:30 p.m. A guest pastor will be officiatin­g. The candelight service will have music and a Scripture reading of the Christmas story.

• Grace Bible Fellowship Church, 6959Route 9, Rhinebeck, will have a Christmas Eve service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 10:45 a.m., with the singing of Christmas carols, a cantata by the church choir, Scripture readings and a message from God’s word. There will also be a 7 p.m. service that day that will include the singing of Christmas carols, special music, Scripture readings and a message from God’s word. The service will conclude with the lighting of candles, which symbolizes the Lord Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

• Hurley Reformed Church, 11 Main St., will have a Christmas Eve worship service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 10 a.m., with candleligh­t services later that day at 7 and 9 p.m. The Services will include carols and Scripture lessons. The 9p.m. service will include communion. The Rev. Charles E. Stickley, pastor emeritus, will officiate the services.

• Northern Dutchess Bible Church, 59 Fisk St., Red Hook, will have Christmas Eve services on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Both services will feature Christmas music, Christmas carols, a Scripture reading and a brief message.

• Overlook United Methodist Church, 233 Tinker St., Woodstock, will have a Christmas Eve service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m.

• St. Andrew’s Church, 163 Main St., New Paltz, will have a Christmas Eve, also called the Longest Night, service on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. The service is intended to acknowledg­e that many people struggle to find the joy of the Christmas season in the midst of sorrow over significan­t losses of loved ones, relationsh­ips, jobs and dreams. The service will include celebratio­n of the Holy Eucharist.

• St. Colman Church ,18 Brigham St., East Kingston, will have a Christmas Eve service on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 4 p.m. and a Christmas Day service on Monday, Dec. 25, at 9 a.m.

• St. John’s Episcopal Church, 207 Albany Ave., Kingston, will have a Christmas Eve family service and Christmas Pageant on Sunday, Dec. 24, at 5 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. that day, there will be the singing of Christmas carols, followed at 8 p.m. by a candlelit choral Eucharist. Christmas Day morning prayer will take place Monday, Dec. 25, at 9a.m. The Rev. Michelle Meech will officiate.

• St. John’s Reformed Church, 126 Old Post Road North, Red Hook, will have a RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES

Menorah lightings in Ulster County on Dec. 17, 18

Chabad of Ulster County announced that the following public menorah lightings will be taking place:

• Sunday, Dec. 17, at 3:30 p.m. at Woodstock Village Green. There will be apple cider, latkes, doughnuts and music.

• Sunday, Dec. 17, at 5 p.m., at Liberty Square in Ellenville, followed by a Chanukah party at 613 Automotive Group, 188 S. Main St., Ellenville. There will be latkes, doughnuts, music and gifts for the children.

• Monday, Dec. 18, at 12:30 p.m. at Wall and North Front streets, Kingston. There will be apple cider, latkes, doughnuts and music.

Public dignitarie­s and community leaders will attend the ceremonies and will assist in kindling the

“menorah.”

Chanukah doughnut decorating contest for teens on Dec. 19

A Chanukah doughnut decorating competitio­n for teens will take place Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Chabad of Ulster County, 254 Lucas Ave.

Dinner will be served. The cost is $8 per person.

They may have lost a loved one, lost a job, moved, may be lonely, may have broken relationsh­ips, may be struggling with health problems or do not feel like celebratin­g this year. Refreshmen­ts will follow the service.
