‘A Christmas Carol’ as a one-man show at Solaris
One-man performances of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” will take place Friday and Saturday, Dec. 22 and 23, at 8 p.m. at Solaris, 360 Warren St., Hudson.
The performances are being presented by Walking the dog Theater of Ghent. The Hudson performances are part of a tour that includes communities in New York, Connecticut and Missouri in December and several cities in China and Taiwan in the new year.
The theater’s Executive Artistic Director David Anderson, who performs the piece solo (moving fluidly from character to character) said in a press release of the project, “‘A Christmas Carol’ has become an annual tradition in many communities, and it is the best way I know to become inspired by the season.”
Through drama and masterful storytelling, Anderson performs the story exactly as Dickens wrote it, giving the audience not only the dialogue but the descriptive passages as well. Anderson’s rendition, directed by Ted Pugh, is a modern revival of Dickens’ own manner of storytelling. Dickens gave performances drawn from “A Christmas Carol” and “The Pickwick Papers” throughout the Northeastern United States, from his arrival in Boston in mid-November 1867 to his return to England in April 1868.
Walking the dog Theater’s production, now in its 12th year, received high praises from Bruce Hallenbeck of The Independent, who wrote of David Anderson’s performance, “Amazing oneman show ... what Dickens intended all along!”
Admission is free as part of Walking the dog’s Free Culture Initiative, which seeks to make the experience of live theater available to all. Donations in support of the initiative will be accepted.
The show is appropriate for ages 10 and up.
